Am I the only person who doesn’t like the new album?

Am I the only person who doesn't like the new album?

It's ok, but raw say anything is way better, and this just is way too overproduced and mainstream. I mean i'm happy that he's making money, but he's lost his originality that made me fall in love with his music. And this whole being Christian thing is ruining him. I blame his new wife. I had to play that line at the end of Hate Everyone a few times to actually believe that he just said "I'm still down with jc" wtf? If you're gonna sing about jesus, why not become a christian rock band, oh wait "the next album [This Is Forever] is about God and how we relate to him" - Max. Max, you're gonna make me cry if you're next album is christian rock.

I loved the angsty teen shtuff but there comes a point when you stop wanting to write about and listen to whiney teen heartbreak. The lyrical development that say anything has shown is human. Who would Max be if he was writing songs with the same subject matter as when he was 16? Max is happy, he's married, he's healthy- add a finally after all that- and this most recent album was just a culmination of all that. If this band is an icon for 'you can make it through to happiness,' idk who is. Who cares if this next album is about God? It's a philosophical observence, not a soap box. His religous views and choices are simply part of his own life journey, which would obviously serve as lyrical muse. If all he ever pumped out was teeny bopper love ballads opening and ending with piano, that'd get old too. He maybe "making money" with music that's "overproduced and mainstream" but it's also much more complicated and intricate than the dormroom demo days. Kudos to Say Anything developing as musicians.

zombi3feast:

I heard they have a new record label that's more mainstream-appeal-to-everyone? I don't know. That's my biggest thing to blame
2) JC....
And I concur, if the next album is "I love jesus even though i've been a jew my whole life" I might have to kill myself xD I mean, don't get me wrong it's great if you wanna believe something new but it's all kinda sudden. Especially since he was such.. proclaimed jew XD

InDefenseoftheGenre:

"i could go on. songs can be angry without cuss words as well. there are some stupid people on this forum"

Well of course they can but it dulls a little impact. For example, Max calling someone "a bag of swill" on Young Dumb and Stung doesn't have the impact of something like,

"Have at thee, false christ, god damn you!"
-Have At Thee

or

"So spit a wad in the face of their FUCKING flawless race, and all they've consecrated"
-In Defense of the Genre

Curse words, though deff not "everything" do, for whatever reason, add impact to a song. The new CD's a bit lacking in this same impact, though it's still my favorite SA CD, I think, I have to admit, the songs are a bit less...powerful.

Which worked for this CD but I wouldn't mind seeing the Parental Advisory sticker return for the next CD, though I doubt it'll happen.

courtneeeyx3:

honestly i think the new cd is really good, i do like the old say anything stuff a little better. but its good to have a change an you never no he could go back to doing some of the old stuff...

Tobbles:

"Listen to the end of Hate Everyone a few more times to find that he clearly states that he is a humanist."

>implying that the lyrical content of Hate Everyone is srs.

Nice.

The Duke:

religion doesnt dull music, there are plenty of religous bands that have edge, mewtihoutyou, august burns red, manchester orchestra, further seems forever, underoath, maylene and the sons of disaster, haste the day, the chariot, norma jean, the showdown, oh sleeper, as cities burn..i could go on. songs can be angry without cuss words as well. there are some stupid people on this forum

InDefenseoftheGenre:

To clear things us, Max has referenced Christ since back in In Defense of the Genre, in fact, he mentioned him more in that CD than in his new one.

Max refers to himself as a "Jewish Christian" who remains culturally Jewish and very much attached to his Judiasm while at the same time delving into some Christian beliefs. He said this in the video chat that was posted. He doesn't really follow any particular religion though he clearly finds Christ fascinating, but that's nothing new. Again, re-listen to In Defense.

As someone raised in the Jewish faith I always kinda appreciated Max's open Judaism and felt I could relate to him more. So I was disappointed a little bit when I had thought Max became a Christian, but I got over it because you know what? It's none of my business anyway and doesn't matter.

When he later cleared it up and explained that he hasn't left Judaism I felt better, but again....why did I care? I can't figure it out.

Anyway, as for the new CD...the lack of cursing I'm not a *huge* fan of, I admit, only because I missed raw, angry songs like "In Defense of the Genre," (the song) and stuff like that. But that aside, the new CD was pretty fantastic, I really think it's one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time and really recommend you give it a chance. As for it being "over-produced,"....Say Anything's ALWAYS been over-produced. Max has a short attention span apparently and loves overloading the songs with tons and tons of things (that's why they require such a big group on tour to actually play the songs) but that's what I've always liked about the band.

Anyway, great CD. I wouldn't mind some cursing on the next one and hope religion doesn't dull the band's edge but so far it really hasn't. I don't see how anyone can listen to Mara and Me and not hear another Say Anything classic.

Pauloki:

Holy shit so you are going to base off all the bad music off material about jesus or god? Note that Max isn't really a true christian with the same ideals as a typical christian he as already said this, he was christian way before he met sherri. You do realize he probably meant about God as in a way that Organized religion is a problem in society and it just ruins peoples lives. Max talks about meaningful things. If all he did was down shit talk god, what kind of message would he be sending, definetly not one he supports now.You act as if he is someone that is going to support cutting habits for all you emo kids, but thats just not the idea. Max bemis is a musical genius, he's not like Switch foot or some crap like that. He's not trying to convert anybody, he's just expressing himself. While some of his music just indicates punk undertones because most of his anger that is driven from politics is based off the politics that effects personal relationships in society. Most of his music before and now are just his personal work. If you don't like it move on to another band.

This new album was not overproduced, it was about as produced as the first album was. He hasn't changed his ideals. He just hasn't decided to become a drug addict, sex fiend, hypocrite which is what he would be if he didn't believe. The record has many punk tones as he as always had, because he isn't down with the system of christian stereotypes and the way people do things in reaction to what happens around them. Good record, will become more valuable in time, because remember that IARB was made when he was about 18 roughly

opal:

just87, you act as if anyone who just plain old doesn't like the album is like that. Yeah, I think it's a lot more mainstream and a bit overproduced. That doesn't mean I wish SA would go back to Baseball, or that I THOUGHT they would. All music expands and evolves, I can live with that and I would be much much more disappointed if the band's sound DIDNT change. But jesus christ its as if disliking SAS/T is like some crime now.

Duke, everyone knows the best music has profanity!

The Duke:

this thread is started by the same tweenie whos upset w/ clean lyrical content, you dont like what a musician has to sing about gtfo go listen to brokencyde i hope his records doo get more preachy so it will get ride of babies. im not defending his religion im apathetic as far as religion goes its not gonna hurt me to hear what other people have to say though. ...

"I definitely feel like some of the songs, like "Do Better", "Hate Everyone", "Crush'd", "Death for my Birthday" and "Eloise" are just way too poppy, manufactured and mainstream. The feeling and emotion seems to be gone. I just don't see myself listening to this album much in the future. When I listen now, I skip most of the songs.

This is a big change from IDOTG, which I still listen to a few times a week. That CD just got better and better and better after repeated listenings."

as far as poppy goes, say anything have always been poppy thats just a copout ...is a real boy is a POP punk album. idotg is a POP punk album....s/t is a pop rock album deal w/ it baseball was a POP punk album

justeightyseven:

Stop listening to them?

Nothing worse than emo kids crying about stuff going 'mainstream' and being 'overproduced'. If you like raw, old Say Anything then go sit in a corner by yourself and listen to their old albums forever. People grow up, people change. It's life.

Unnameworthy:

I'm sure someone has already addressed this, but the "This is Forever" stuff is from like two years ago. It was the title of the self-titled record before Max changed his focus slightly/realized She Wants Revenge had already used that album title.

Also, the "If you're gonna sing about jesus, why not become a christian rock band" line is offensively stupid. Are people not allowed to express their beliefs and opinions without classifying their art as "christian rock music"? There's not a clean line between Christian music (outside the CCM genre) and non-Christian music; an opinion about Jesus is an idea or belief just like any other idea or belief someone may choose to sing about.

chelseabear:

lol, dont tag this as offensive.

btw, for the record, i've decided that i like the new record.

max didn't take a step back, nor did he take a step forward.
it was a step in a new direction, and i respect that.
and that step is damn catchy one, i must say. haha. :]

LIVE LONG. STAND PROUD. SAY ANYTHING!

joeywightman:

im tempted to tag this as offensive... the new album is the only thing ive listened to since it came out and i feel like i still cant get enough... ill be honest it may be different but its just as good if not better because its the same real lyrics and catchy rythmn that theyve had all along and i feel that if you listen to it a little more you will agree that his opinion on religion doesnt really matter if the music is still amazing... i just wish there were more bands like say anything out there

chelseabear:

I totally didn't realize that the name dropping was bugging me too until you mentioned it. :-/

misspotn4: thanks for clearing that up with your story. :] i think some places do insist on taking jesus into your heart, because the place my friend went to did. but its nice to know that not all of the places are the same.

misspotn4:

Well, for the record, I'm not religous, but I did get in some trouble last year and got court ordered to NA. Well, it's a spiritual, not religious program. I'm very skeptical and had trouble with the whole idea. But, it's not Christian or religious. You need to find a power greater than yourself (besides drugs and alcohol or even sex) to help you deal with life on life's terms.

I've been a fan of Say Anything for years and years and have seen them live many times, but I have to say that this record is very disappointing. Mostly because the lyrics have lame name dropping and it sounds too poppy and over produced. I already took it out of my CD player, after like 2 days. I have ISARB in there now. So sad. I'm not giving up on them, but I hope Max brings out more good music. I must say, I'm glad I was at the second date of their tour so I only had to listen to a few of the new songs. I sort of like a few of the songs, but disappointment in the overall quality made me put on some great music.

opal:

@yeamans, yeah I understand. I think it's wonderful that Max is in a better place in his life now, with his wife and religiously and whatever. He's writing happier, poppier music that corresponds to his improved outlook on life. I understand all of that... but really, try as I might I just... don't like it. I can understand WHY the music is heading where it's heading all I want, but I can't make myself like it. Ya know?

Opal, I get where you are coming from, I really do, but given that most SA songs are a chronicle of Max's life, this is the path his life has taken, so by design this is the path the music has followed as well.

multocco:

What did he say in the video chat about this?

Perly_Evil:

The new album has a great sound. I really REALLY like it. I you take it into your own hands that you do sinful things in a rock band and it's really confusing that a mindful person like max is full of jesus's love or something now. I understand that when you become a believer that the feeling of being loved by god is something you can't shrug off, it seems very real to you. But it does go to show that anyone as cocky as max can have these feelings too. It's not like he has a rigid exterior, but he always wore his heart on his sleeve, which is why it surprises me he's taken this direction in life.

opal:

I'm glad you feel that way, we all should!
Yeah, it did, but at the same time I'm a bit annoyed that people wasted time with asking that in the first place. At least 1/3 of the questions I saw were related to his religion and Christianity. Really, now... get over it, guys. But at least it can stop now

chelseabear:

Well, I've already said that I'm down with him being happy, and the video chat cleared a lot of things up.

opal:

I'm ignoring the conversation that has gone on before this:

I think we are the only two people who feel the same, kintod. I don't like it much, either... it's better than I thought it would be but I am honestly a bit upset. I don't want this to be the way SA heads in the future.

I really, REALLY hate it when people bring religion into this, though. It's not really any of our business and it makes no difference anyways. What's it to you that Max is finally happy where he is spiritually? I don't believe in any religious nonsense but i still support him (well, as much as one fan in a sea of thousands can...) you should too. I find it hard to believe that his music has gone "softer" simply because of religion. I mean, he was Jewish when IARB was released - not sure how much of the religion he actually practiced and took into his daily life, but he was Jewish nonetheless.
By the way, he said in the video chat earlier today that he was Christian long before he met his wife Sherri DuPree. So you can stop blaming her.

bmarshall747:

i looked into it a bit. max went to the menninger clinic in houston in 2005. and yes they do use 12-step programs.

chelseabear:

if you've EVER done drugs, they treat you like an addict... my friend was treated that way once.

bmarshall747:

if the hospital max was at uses a 12-step program then yes it was probably forced on him. but i believe he was there because of his bipolar disorder more so than drug addiction.

Scoonie:

I agree with the original poster, I don't like the new album either. Of the 13 songs, I like 5 of them. Even the 5 I like don't compare to their previous stuff.

I definitely feel like some of the songs, like "Do Better", "Hate Everyone", "Crush'd", "Death for my Birthday" and "Eloise" are just way too poppy, manufactured and mainstream. The feeling and emotion seems to be gone. I just don't see myself listening to this album much in the future. When I listen now, I skip most of the songs.

This is a big change from IDOTG, which I still listen to a few times a week. That CD just got better and better and better after repeated listenings.

chelseabear:

still thinking about AA... and other rehabilitation programs... I wonder if Max was pressured into religion in the hospital as well... what kind of hospital was it?

religion is the cause of so much hate. *sigh* prop 8. man...

bmarshall747:

although i like that idea, it seems to be very fairy tale'ish. i may read into it a bit though.

DiPoLe:

deism for me always leads me to atlantis honestly, but it's fun to think about. Elantris is my favorite novel at the moment.

Bahai is uses the same God from other religions and credits most other prophets kinda like the koran does. its relatively young (~150 years) and small (5-6M), and the overarching idea is that we are finally in the age where the absolute unity of the entire human family both feasible and necessary.

chelseabear:

Not familiar with it. Where is it from? Relatively young? What's it considered?

i could look it up, but then i would probably get side tracked.

(Bahai)

bmarshall747:

i'm a big fan of deism.

DiPoLe:

Buddhism is cool, I believe in karma pretty strongly. It's too big though and has too many connotations to it for my taste.
Try reading up on Bahai. I found it recently and am trying to find somewhere they hold sermons.

kintod:

i agree completely with both of those things. haha

multocco:

Yeah I don't think that's right. Not only is it indoctrinating a set of beliefs (even if it is for the right reasons), I think it would be ideal for people to recover on a set of circumstances they set for themselves. It's very easy to use faith to give people a reason to stay clean, and if it works, great, but it doesn't seem right. Like what was said before, it's like giving another drug to preoccupy you from substance.

bmarshall747:

i went to church when i was a kid. then when i got a bit older (about 13), i refused to go because i realized that a majority of the folks there were terrible terrible people. so many of them have an elitist type attitude, and yes, hardly any of them follow the religion appropriately.

oh and about the AA NA jesus thing. AA is total bullshit. i got into a bit of trouble and have to go to some and its complete shit. they basically tell you the only way to stop drinking is to hand your life over to god.

chelseabear:

*sigh* to that video.

multocco:

I guess we'll just have to see where the next album takes Say Anything. Really, I can't see Max ever being angry again. I don't mind that, really. Honestly, the B-Sides songs were actually probably my favorites off of the new album lyrically. Why? Because they were fresh and original topics that weren't about his personal life(I actually am pretty sure the B-Sides are songs he did for the Song Shop).

DiPoLe:

=

...i dont own a record player anyway.

chelseabear:

AA and NA is a Christian thing. They force you to take Jesus into your heart. It really is all they do. They replace the high of drugs with the "high of God." Thats why the Christians bred in those programs take to the religion with such tenacity

kintod:

yea, i was raised in a jewish sort of way, but realized religion and god are for people that need it, and i really don't

chelseabear:

Cemetery is a rose. Its the only way I know how to describe it.

Yeah, religion isn't meant to be fickle. I used to be a Christian. I converted on my own without any pressure from my parents or anything... but I left the church because I was annoyed with the hypocrites that seemed to flock there. There was a lot of greed there, too. I was disgusted and decided that the people were just covering for their horrible souls, like saying that they believed in God would make them okay to do whatever they want.

Buddhism seems like a nice religion...

multocco:

"its funny how people replace their problems and addictions to an addiction with god. i don't see how thats anymore health... the only difference is that it doesn't mess with your body..."

You kind of took the words out of my head. I don't understand why so many people in AA or NA use Jesus as some sort of reason or guide to help them recover.

kintod:

please don't smash all your stuff but... http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=63950637

multocco:

Well, the fact that he practices a non-denominational form of Christianity kind of erks me too. I'm agnostic, and I went to Catholic school for 8 years primarily as a source of education and I was always taught about other religions and acceptance (for instance, we went to Mosques and Temples). What I particularly admired about people who are apart of these institutions is their complete commitment to their faith and following the laws of their religion. I'm not saying Max does this, but I am annoyed when people pick and choose what parts of their religion they want to follow or feel they can live a certain lifestyle and practice their own type of worship, yet still call themselves "Christian" or whatever.

DiPoLe:

i got the same impression about him being afraid of hell, he almost seems certain of the fact that he's already damned. I wish i could understand it like he does but his solace seemed to be the purity he found in his wife. Cemetary is an amazing song.

chelseabear:

i meant, like he seems scared to go to hell. iono. sometimes. sometimes he plays it off, but almost like its a nervous thing.

i misinterpret everything though. i could read a children's book about a fish whos afraid to drown... and i'd be like "well, maybe he's really agoraphobic."

DiPoLe:

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

CHRISTIAN?!?!?!

did you even listen to the first track on the record?? He clearly denounces fundamentalist christianity in all of its stupidity. "Down with JC" is different from saying "praise Jesus Christ our Lord". I'd say it's even ambiguous enough to be taken as a slight towards the great prophet. Listen to the end of Hate Everyone a few more times to find that he clearly states that he is a humanist... It took every ounce of my sanity to prevent my inner ego from saying you dont even deserve Max's music for the christianity comment.. but to blame his wife? you will honestly claim to like an artist who's ideals you believe are so foundationally insecure as to be swayed by a woman? (no offense ladies)
Sorry.... it isnt your fault that religions have been so cooked and skewed that you can't seem to think of faith in any terms other than social norms.. But Died a Jew should have given you a clue as to how he felt about JC, i assure you he hasn't changed that thought so drastically as to claim himself a christian.

To Marshall, I see what you're saying since you seem to have liked max a lot for the fact that he was a punk rebel (rather than a self/others loathing idealist), but including Jesus in his preaching is something that was bound to happen. like he said he's out to save our souls, which have, for the most part, been bound up in a 2000 year old exaggeration and misinterpretation. Hopefully if people would actually give the first track some thought... they might understand that jesus was a man. Him dying was proof of that. and his legacy is a direct contradiction of the first commandment. He would indeed hang his head in shame to see that his name has actually become such a caricaturesque understanding in God.

and if I'm wrong and you can quote him saying "I now follow the Christian faith" then i will calmly retract my statement along with any offense i may have caused as I smash and delete everything related to SA that I own.

multocco:

Are you serious? The album that you're talking about that is supposed to be called "This is Forever" is the current release. "This is Forever" was changed to "Say Anything". Considering that Fed To Death has the lines "This is Forever" in it, you'd think that you would put two and two together.

But yeah, I never really picture Max taking religion and faith so literally, it's a bit disappointing and awkward, but at the same time I see where he's coming from and I'm glad he's happy. As long as he doesn't start preaching then I'll still happily listen to the music he produces. But as for the new album being "mainstream", they said that they were going to make the most cohesive and mature album, and this is definitely that. That doesn't necessarily mean it is their best effort, in fact, I think it's the weakest of their three major releases. It's still good and it's been on non-stop rotation for me.

kintod:

oh. well that makes me feel a little better at least. but i really hope he doesnt start getting more jesusy
